Garden Pergola & Entertaining Space

About This Project

We designed and built a bespoke timber pergola with composite decking to create a dedicated outdoor entertaining space for this Hemel Hempstead family. The pergola framework was constructed from pressure-treated softwood timbers, carefully planed and sanded to a smooth finish, then treated with a weather-resistant stain for long-term durability. The composite decking boards were chosen for their low-maintenance qualities — they resist fading, staining, and require no annual oiling or sealing. We incorporated LED festoon lighting strung across the pergola rafters, providing warm ambient lighting for evening entertaining. A built-in L-shaped seating area with hinged lids offers generous hidden storage underneath for garden cushions and outdoor accessories. Around the perimeter, we created raised planting beds edged with treated timber sleepers and filled with a mix of ornamental grasses and flowering shrubs for seasonal colour. New channel drainage was installed along the decking edge to manage water run-off effectively, and the existing lawn was stripped, levelled, and re-turfed with a hardwearing seed mix to complement the new decked area. The finished space provides a versatile outdoor room that the homeowners use for dining, relaxing, and hosting gatherings throughout the warmer months.
